Your organization can help fill the gap and ensure more children have access to the meals they need.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Research Shows<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Summer hunger can lead to learning loss, lower\u00a0concentration\u00a0and health challenges.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Children with access to nutritious meals are more likely to return to school ready to learn.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Communities with active summer meal programs report higher family engagement and stronger child well-being.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<p><b>Benefits of Participating in SUN Meals<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Combat Summer Hunger: Provide free, nutritious meals to children and teens when school is out.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Promote Healthy Habits: Serve meals that meet\u00a0SFSP\u00a0nutrition standards and include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Support Families: Help ease food costs for families during\u00a0the\u00a0summer months.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Build Community: Bring children and families together in positive, supervised settings.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Increase Program Impact: Strengthen your organization&#8217;s outreach and visibility while addressing a vital community need.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Receive Federal Reimbursement: Offset food and operational costs through USDA funding.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Goals of USDA FNS to Feed Children During the Summer Months<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In partnership with States, Indian Tribal Organizations, territories, community organizations, and other partners, FNS is working to:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increase food and nutrition security for children when school is out through effective implementation of all three approaches to ensure children have access to healthy meals throughout the summer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Promote holistic summer programming that combines access to nutritious food with recreational, educational, and other enrichment opportunities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Expand the reach of summer nutrition programs in rural communities across the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Raise awareness of summer nutrition programs, including ensuring all families eligible for SUN Bucks have access to its benefits.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\n\t\tSun Meals Program Overview\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p><b>Who Can Participate<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Children 18 years and younger\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Persons over 18 who are enrolled in school programs for persons with disabilities\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Site Eligibility<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Be located in\u00a0eligible areas (based on census or school data showing 50%+ of children qualify for free\/reduced-price meals)\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Types of service sites:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open\/open restricted\u00a0(serve all children in the area)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Closed enrolled (serve only children in a specific program)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Migrant\u00a0(primarily serving children of migrant workers and provides\u00a0appropriate certification)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Summer camp\u00a0(offers regularly scheduled food service along with organized activities for enrolled residential or day campers)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>National Youth Sports Program\u00a0(NYSP)\u00a0(children\u00a018 years-old and under that are\u00a0enrolled\u00a0with college or university\u00a0participating\u00a0in this\u00a0summer\u00a0program)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Offer supervised meal service during summer months\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Organization Eligibility:<\/b><b>\u202f<\/b><b>\u202f<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sponsors must be:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Public School Food Authority (SFA), private nonprofit school, State or local government agency, private nonprofit organization,\u00a0public or private nonprofit colleges or universities\u00a0participating\u00a0in\u00a0NYSP,\u00a0or public or private nonprofit camps\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Sponsors must provide year-round service to\u00a0the\u00a0community\u00a0(except NYSP sponsors)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Required Training<\/b><b>\u202f<\/b><b>\u202f<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Training is\u00a0required\u00a0for staff\u00a0operating\u00a0the\u00a0Summer Food Service Program. Training includes meal pattern information, record-keeping\u00a0requirements\u00a0and civil rights compliance.\u202f\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tSFSP Meal Service\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>The SFSP meal patterns were designed for children ages 6 through 12 years old. Therefore, the SFSP meal\u00a0pattern\u00a0minimum serving sizes may not be suitable for all children attending the summer site. Active teenagers may need more food than younger children and may feel that the\u00a0portion\u00a0sizes are too small. Conversely, for children younger than 6 years old, the serving sizes may be too big. In these situations, sponsors may be approved to serve more age-appropriate\u00a0portion\u00a0sizes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Up to\u00a0two\u00a0meal types can be served.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All meals and snacks must meet the\u00a0SFSP\u00a0meal\u00a0pattern requirements.\u202f\u00a0The\u00a0SFSP\u00a0meal patterns are designed to meet the needs of children and are based on the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs).\u202f\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are\u00a0four\u00a0meal components\u00a0in the SFSP: grains\/bread, vegetables\/fruits, meats\/meat\u00a0alternates\u00a0and fluid milk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A creditable breakfast requires three meal components: fluid milk, fruits and\/or vegetables, and grains\/bread.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A creditable lunch or supper will include\u00a0our\u00a0meal components:\u00a0fluid milk,\u00a0two\u00a0fruits\/vegetables, grains\/bread\u00a0and\u00a0meats\/meat alternates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Creditable snacks consist of two different meal components.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The meal pattern\u00a0states\u00a0the required minimum serving size for each meal\u00a0component. You can serve more food if needed, but the reimbursement rate\u00a0remains\u00a0the same.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The meal pattern is component-based and supports proper nutrition by age group. It includes the following\u00a04\u00a0meal components:\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/growthzonecmsprodeastus.azureedge.net\/sites\/1980\/2025\/11\/Grain.png\" alt=\"Grain\" height=\"1000\" width=\"1000\" title=\"Grain\" \/>\n\t<p><strong>Grains\/Breads<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grains and breads must be whole\u00a0grain or enriched or made from whole-grain or enriched flour or meal; ready-to-eat cereals must be whole\u00a0grain, enriched, or fortified.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Enriched macaroni products fortified with protein may count towards either the grains\u00a0component\u00a0or the meat\/meat alternate\u00a0component, but not as both in the same meal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Piecrust used as part of the main dish (i.e., for meat turnovers or\u00a0meat pies) is allowed as a grain item.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Non-sweet snack foods such as hard pretzels, hard bread sticks, and chips made from whole-grain or enriched meal or flour can be used to meet the grain requirement. <\/li>\n<li>Choose whole grains and whole-grain\u00a0products\u00a0when possible,\u00a0to provide\u00a0additional\u00a0vitamins, minerals, and fiber; see How to Build a Healthy Plate in this guide for more information on\u00a0identifying\u00a0and serving healthy whole-grain products.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/growthzonecmsprodeastus.azureedge.net\/sites\/1980\/2025\/11\/Vegetable.png\" alt=\"Vegetable\" height=\"1000\" width=\"1000\" title=\"Vegetable\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/growthzonecmsprodeastus.azureedge.net\/sites\/1980\/2025\/11\/Fruit.png\" alt=\"Fruit\" height=\"1000\" width=\"1000\" title=\"Fruit\" \/>\n\t<p><strong>Vegetables\/Fruits\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At breakfast, a serving of fruit, vegetables,\u00a0or full-strength (100%) juice, or an equivalent quantity in any combination, is\u00a0required.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>For lunch or supper, serve two or more kinds of vegetables and\/or fruits. Up to one-half of the vegetable\/fruit requirement may be met with full-strength (100%) juice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Cooked vegetables mean a serving of drained cooked vegetables.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Cooked or canned fruit means a serving of fruit,\u00a0including the juice the fruit is packed in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Thawed frozen fruit includes fruit and the thawed juice\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Dry, cooked\u00a0beans,\u00a0peas\u00a0and lentils\u00a0cannot be credited as both vegetables and meats\/meat alternates\u00a0within the same meal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Dried fruits, such as dried apricots, raisins, and prunes, may be used to meet requirements. Dried fruit is credited based on the volume served.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Fruit sold within commercially prepared yogurt, whether blended, mixed, or on top, cannot be credited toward the fruit requirement. Extra fruit provided as a separate\u00a0component\u00a0can be credited.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Small amounts\u00a0of relish, ketchup, jams or jellies, or other condiments may be added as\u00a0additional\u00a0foods for flavor or garnish. However, these do not count towards the fruit and vegetable requirements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Serve a variety of\u00a0fruits\u00a0or\u00a0vegetables. Serving two forms of the same fruit or vegetable in the same meal (for example: orange and orange juice, or an apple and applesauce) is not\u00a0allowable. The two vegetables and\/or fruit served at lunch and supper meals must be different from each other.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Full-strength (100%) fruit or vegetable juice may\u00a0not\u00a0be served as part of a reimbursable snack if milk is the only other\u00a0component\u00a0served.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Juice or syrup from canned fruit does not count as fruit juice.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/growthzonecmsprodeastus.azureedge.net\/sites\/1980\/2025\/11\/Meat.png\" alt=\"Meat\" height=\"1000\" width=\"1000\" title=\"Meat\" \/>\n\t<p><strong>Meats\/Meat Alternates\u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Meats\u00a0or meat alternates must be served at lunch and supper.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Meats\u00a0or meat alternates may be served as part of a snack or as an\u00a0additional\u00a0item at breakfast.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Dry, cooked\u00a0beans,\u00a0peas\u00a0and lentils\u00a0cannot be credited as both\u00a0a vegetable\u00a0and meat\/meat alternate within the same meal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Meats\/meat alternates with APPs should be accompanied by a CN label or have a Product Formulation Statement. Prior to being added to other products, APPs must meet specific standards.\u00a0Before using products\u00a0containing\u00a0APP and claiming the meals for reimbursement, contact your State agency or your sponsoring organization.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Nuts and seeds may fulfill the entire\u00a0meats\/meat\u00a0alternates\u00a0requirement for snack,\u00a0lunch\u00a0or supper.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Children under 4 years old are at the highest risk of choking; nuts and seeds should only be served to young\u00a0children\u00a0ground or finely chopped in a prepared food, and nut\/seed butters should be spread thinly on bread or crackers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>For snack,\u00a04 oz. or\u00a0\u00bd\u00a0cup of plain,\u00a0sweetened\u00a0or flavored yogurt may credit as\u00a01\u00a0oz.\u00a0\u00a0of meats\/meat alternates.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>For lunch and supper,\u00a08 oz. or 1 cup of plain,\u00a0sweetened\u00a0or flavored yogurt may\u00a0credit\u00a0as\u00a02 oz. of meats\/meat alternates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Homemade yogurt, frozen yogurt (similar to\u00a0ice cream) or other yogurt-flavored products (e.g.\u00a0yogurt bars, yogurt-covered\u00a0fruit\u00a0or nuts, etc.) are not creditable.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/growthzonecmsprodeastus.azureedge.net\/sites\/1980\/2025\/11\/Milk.png\" alt=\"Milk\" height=\"1000\" width=\"1000\" title=\"Milk\" \/>\n\t<p><strong>Fluid Milk\u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At breakfast or snack, milk can be served as a beverage\u00a0or on\u00a0cereal, or a combination of both.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>At lunch or supper, milk must be served as a beverage.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>In Alaska, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Virgin Islands of the United States, if a sufficient supply of such types of fluid milk cannot be obtained,\u00a0reconstituted\u00a0or recombined milk may be used. All milk should\u00a0contain\u00a0Vitamins A and D at the levels specified by the Food and Drug Administration and at levels consistent with State and local standards for such milk.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>At this time, sponsors following the SUN meal patterns may only serve non-dairy beverages in place of fluid milk in a reimbursable meal when it is supported by a medical statement signed by a licensed physician, health care\u00a0professional\u00a0or registered dietitian.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cacfp.org\/assets\/pdf\/USDA_SFSP_NutritionGuide2+cacfp.org\/\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSFSP Nutrition Guide\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/summer\/sunmeals\/mealpatterns\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSummer Meal Patterns\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<p>SUN Meals\u00a0sponsors\u00a0can\u00a0determine\u00a0their meal service model.\u00a0Sponsors\u00a0can:\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare snacks and\/or meals onsite.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Procure (purchase)\u00a0and deliver\u00a0meals (vended meals)\u202fto\u00a0SUN Meals\u00a0sites.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SFSP\u00a0meals and\/or snacks must be served in a congregate setting.\u00a0Meal service times must be\u00a0established\u00a0by\u00a0the\u00a0sponsor for each site, included in the\u00a0sponsor&#8217;s\u00a0application\u00a0and approved by the State agency.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SUN Meals\u00a0does provide for some meal service\u00a0flexibilities.\u202f\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sites can implement Offer vs Serve meal service for breakfast,\u00a0lunch\u00a0or supper.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Sites can also implement\u00a0pre-plated and\u00a0family\u00a0style\u00a0meal\u00a0service.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Participants can take one meal\u00a0component\u00a0off-site. Must be either a vegetable,\u00a0fruit\u00a0or grain\u00a0without prior State agency approval\u00a0as long as\u00a0all applicable State and local health, safety, and sanitation standards are met. Sponsors should only allow an item to be taken off-site if the site has enough staff to\u00a0monitor\u00a0the practice and ensure no food safety or Program integrity issues arise.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Operators can implement the use of\u00a0&#8220;share tables&#8221; which are tables or stations where children may return whole food or beverage items they choose not to\u00a0eat, if\u00a0it\u00a0is in compliance with\u00a0local and state health and food safety codes. Connect with your State agency for more information.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Sun Meals To-Go: Rural Site Meal Service Option<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SUN Meals To-Go is part of the USDA&#8217;s Summer Nutrition Programs for Kids, designed to ensure children in rural areas continue receiving nutritious meals when school is out. Unlike traditional congregate meal services, SUN Meals To-Go allows eligible children to pick up meals or have them delivered, offering flexibility for families in remote communities. To learn more about Sun Meals To-Go, visit\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/summer\/sunmeals2go\/non-congregate\">SUN Meals To-Go (Non-Congregate Summer Meal Service) | Food and Nutrition Service<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\t<p><b>Recordkeeping and Reporting<\/b><b>\u202f<\/b><b>\u202f<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The site must track attendance and record meal counts. Use daily forms or approved electronic systems to document the number of meals served and daily attendance.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Each month, claims must be\u00a0submitted\u00a0for reimbursement. If you are working with a sponsor, the sponsor will\u00a0submit\u00a0claims to the State agency on your behalf.\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Agreement \/ Application\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Comply with\u00a0State or local health &amp; safety standards (check to see if State or local licensing or approval is\u00a0required)\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Menu(s)\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Daily Attendance\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Daily Meal Counts\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cacfp.org\/assets\/pdf\/SFSP-Accurate+Meal+Counting-RELEASE-Web\/\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAccurate Meal Counting and Claims\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n<h2>\n\t\tJoining Made Easy\u202f\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p><strong>1.
